LA CHIMERA

2017

With the aid of readily available photography tools nowadays, the matter of creating online persona has never been easier. As our bodies exist in both corporeal and virtual environment, who is to say if one is more real than the other, given identity/gender performances take place in both? In the case with transgender people, the sprawl of online self-contributed photo-based media facilities more visibility and representation even, conditioning the projection of an ideal self versus the biological body assigned at birth.

"Chimera - (in Greek mythology) is a fire-breathing female monster with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail. The word also implies any similarly grotesque monster having disparate parts, especially asdepicted in decorative art”. In the current digital age, as boundaries between the biological and technological, the private and the public, male and female,... are blurred, we might as well are chimeras of fragmented identities, just without serpent tails.

MY LINH - Chat with Mozart vol.2

Director Duong Dieu Linh
Photography Linh Pham
Writing Duong Dieu Linh & Lac Hoang
Art Direction, Fashion Styling & Storyboard Lac Hoang

Chat with Mozart vol.2 is an extension of an album with the same name, finished in 2003. Remixing classical music with funk beats & RnB rhythm, this album marked My Linh's last CD, wrapping up her career as well as life-long collaboration with her band member.

For this MV, My Linh was hoping to resonate with Vietnamese millennials, as the base of her following is the preceding generations. She aimed for a youthful MV to tell the universal story of "unfulfilled" crush, as an allegory for events that occur only once, yet linger for a lifetime.

DOUBLE BURDEN

A collaboration between Lac Hoang x Chula Fashion House
Featuring Yen Tran & Bui Thao Phuong
2018

Housework, childcare and other unpaid care are tasks commonly and disproportionately taken by women. Which are first, unpaid and second, cutting down on the amount of time for actual paid work. They also lower bargaining power and reinforce restrictive gender norms/ roles. Growing up, I often see my mom and grandmothers hustling back from a long day at work just to take on another shift at home. Second shift, double day or double burden, however they are named, become the normalized standard of women’s work, unanimous and at the same time, under-acknowledged. The sight of the women in my house doing housework on their own often makes me think of powerful yet lonely superheroes, fighting for everything but themselves.

It’s my view that gender is culturally formed, but it’s also a domain of agency or freedom and that it is most important to resist the violence that is imposed by ideal gender norms, especially against those who are gender different, who are nonconforming in their gender presentation
